Abstract | In August 2017, the Macao community had suffered severely from the attack of Typhoon Hato, which caused 10 fatalities and about 240 injuries, as well as extensive property damages and disruption of community services in Macao. Nonetheless, as a 24/7 industry and a material driver of Macao’s economy and tourism sector, the six casino concession companies had to keep their integrated resorts’ business as usual in the aftermath of the typhoon. Consequently, certain integrated resort operator(s) had been subject to floods of negative publicity in both the traditional mass media and the social media due to their stakeholders’ doubts towards their negligence in the local community’s situation (The Macau Post Daily, 31 August 2017). In the light of relieving the emergency condition in the Macao community and in order to resolve the challenges from stakeholders which might lead to corporate reputational threats, the six integrated resort operators had successively announced and executed a variety of remedial measures to provide assistance and relief to the community members in need. These reactions were deemed to be an expression of their usual or, in some respects, additional level of commitment to their corporate social responsibility (CSR) towards the Macao society. Meanwhile, they were also perceived as having an ultimate aim of rebuilding the trust and image among their employees and the other stakeholders in the community. |
