Abstract | “Aesthetics” (meixue 美学) is a relatively recent notion in Chinese thought, being a sort of imported neologism from Japan in the late 18th century. Nonetheless, in the history of Chinese thought and in the practice of art and craftmanship, we can witness a large amount of text that were devoted to important aesthetic notions. This book deals with the possibility and limits of a general reflection and survey of this field of research, providing several perspectives on traditional arts such as painting, calligraphy, poetry, or ceramics, as well as less known forms of artistic traditions. Moreover, it conveys an insightful net of cross-cultural points of view on aesthetics and art, in order to foster a dialogue among Chinese, European, and American thoughts. |
