AbstractThis book presents an innovative reading of Daoist philosophy based on a comprehensive interpretation of the book of Zhuangzi. It is shown how this Daoist classic subverts the Confucian idols of its time by means of satirical allegories and ironical reflections. With humor and parody the Zhuangzi exposes how the Confucian demand to authentically commit to socially constructed roles and norms only fosters pretence and hypocrisy. As a healthier alternative to Confucianism, the Zhuangzi expounds the Daoist art of “genuine pretending”: the paradoxical skill of “smooth operators” who not only survive, but thrive in society by fulfilling their roles with grace and pleasure without being tricked into submitting to them or letting them define one’s identity.
