Abstract | Nowadays, discourse analysis deals with not only verbal texts but also images and sound, so do translation and interpreting studies. Therefore, the concept of “multimodality” has become an increasingly important topic in subject areas of linguistics, discourse analysis and translation studies. This introductory chapter gives an overview of the development of multimodal approaches to discourse analysis and of previous research on multimodal translation and interpreting. It introduces the main approaches to multimodal discourse analysis, including visual grammar (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2006), visual metaphor (e.g. Forcevile, 1996), and image-text relations (e.g. Martinec and Salway, 2005). It also provides a birds-eye-view of each chapter of the whole book, which applies different frameworks to the analysis of intersemiotic shifts in Chinese-English translation and interpreting. The topics of the chapters range from translations of Chinese classics such as the Monkey King, Mulan and The Art of War, to interpretations of up-to-date issues such as those related to city branding and the Chinese Bell and Road Initiative. It is argued that the research results will provide insights for readers and researchers to rethink about traditional and newly-emerged translational phenomena in both print and digital media. |
