Abstract

Over the past ten years since Baker (2006) initiated the application of narrative theory in translation studies, scholars have attempted to apply the theory to investigating the roles of narratives in translation and interpreting in conflict situations, as well as the ways narratives and translated narratives are used by various powers to legitimize their version of events. However, up to now, very little research of this kind has been done on Chinese-English translation. Employing the framing strategies raised by Baker (2006), this article examines Chinese and English versions of news reports on the Edward Snowden disclosure incident with a bilingual corpus of 47 pairs of news items. The English data are collected from ECNS.cn, the English website of China News Service run by the Chinese government, and the Chinese texts are also from Chinese state-owned news agencies. The research results show that, even though the news agency producing the translated news shares the same ideology with those providing the Chinese news, the translated narratives of the incident are often reframed and the news stance often deviates from the original texts. The authors argue that possible factors leading to the reframing of narrative and deviation of stance include the target readership, the political situation and the political position of the news agency. They also argue that the application of narrative account may help to better explore stance variation in sensitive news translation.
