Abstract | This research extends incivility research by investigating how third parties respond to workplace incivility. Building on the affect event theory, we posit that witnessing workplace incivility is associated with emotional experience of anger, and in turn triggers the third parties’ retribution toward the offender and support toward the targets. In addition, guided by theories of vigilante justice and appraisal-coping, we further hypothesize that experienced incivility moderates the proposed indirect relationships according to two competing explanations. The findings from a scenario-based experiment support our predictions. Implications for research and practice are discussed. |
