AbstractThis study analyzes data collected in the various cycles of PISA assessment so as to find out the emerging trend of print reading literacy performance for 15-year-old students in Macao. To account for the emergent trend, gender difference in print reading literacy of Macao males and females are examined. Moreover, gender differences at the various percentiles are contrasted to reveal the reading literacy performance of the bottom and top performers, both for the combined scale and the three subscales of reading literacy. The key finding of the present study was that there was a decline of Macao 15-year-olds’ print reading performance during 2003-2009. This decline, equivalent to 0.28 grade level of reading literacy progression in the school curriculum, can be explained by the decline in literacy performance of the males, particularly those at the bottom percentiles. There is evidence to show that irrespective of males and females at all percentiles of the score distribution the print reading performance was lower in 2009 than 2006, indicating that classroom practices and reading instruction policies need to be scrutinized for evidence-based policy making for the betterment of the quality of reading literacy education in Macao schools. The declining print reading literacy standards of Macao15-year-olds studying at Grade 7-10 rings the alarm bell for all those who have an interest in talent education in Macao schools.
