AbstractAs professional translation grow in estimated value and Translations Studies grow as an academic discipline, the need for translation and interpretation training has also increased considerably. Over the past decade, many translation training/education programmes have been launched either at the undergraduate level or the postgraduate level, or both (e.g. China, Britain) for various reasons and towards different goals. This lecture will review the recent rapid development of translation programmes in Chinese Universities and examine the various factors that have worked together to bring forth the birth of BA and MA translation programs in the country over the past 5 years. It is hoped that such understanding will be of benefit to countries attempting to launch translation programmes in practical terms, and of considerable significance to translation teaching research since this is an area that has hardly been studied (cf. Kelly 2005).
