AbstractDrawing on the subjective norm perspective in planned behavior theory, we develop and test a multilevel model of employee green behavior (EGB) that tends to investigate how leader expectations for EGB can promote EGB. We test the cross-level chain mediating effect of leader green behavior and then employee green role identity based on a multilevel design that involved 211 employees and 30 leaders working in two Chinese companies. Results of multilevel path analysis suggest that leader expectations for EGB enhance EGB through leader green behavior, and then employee green role identity. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
